Susan Santos (left), Janet Tamtan, and Lita Santos pack compost on which mushrooms will grow, part of a livelihood project sponsored by the United Methodist Church in Camachile, Luzon. The church maintains a pastoral presence here among indigenous Aetnas who were displaced by the eruption of Mt Pinatubo, and has used mushroom production and other livelihood projects to provide income to poor families. Government-sponsored repression in the area has struck many of these families, and the church is a presence of hope and peace amidst the conflict.
