The body of a refugee child is carried along a beach on the Greek island of Lesbos on November 1, 2015. It was covered with a plastic raincoat by Spanish lifeguards until it could be picked up by local authorities. The body appeared to be that of an Afghan boy of about 8 years of age. Thousands of refugees have died this year attempting to cross the Aegean from Turkey to Greece. Fleeing violence in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, most are on their way toward western Europe.
